Research and Planning ANALYSIS MAGAZINE 2

The genre of this magazine is bubblegum pop. This is shown by many different features, the first being the images on the front cover. The photographs on the cover of this issue are of artists such as One direction (the main cover boys), Little Mix, The Vamps and so on. These are all artists in the pop industry which indicates to us that this is a pop magazine. The colours used are all bright and bold, pink and yellows which shows us that this is a fun, happy magazine and this is what the colours connote. This proves to us that this is a pop mag. The stories featured on the cover of this magazine are  focused around girly confessions and conversations such as Valentines and accessories. This shows us that this mag is a fun pop genre for young, teenage girls. Images of accessories and shoes are also featured on the cover which shows us its a pop magazine because girls who fantasise about shoes and jewellery tend to love pop music.

The main cover image for this magazine is One Direction. They are represented as friendly, smiley boys who give off positive vibes. Their clothes are all colour coded to a certain extent and are quite bright blues and whites. Their attitude is represented as friendly and caring as they are all smiling with their hands and arms on each others shoulders. Their body language gives off positive vibes. By putting One Direction on the cover, this is a major selling point as they're given the title of Biggest Band in the World. This will help to sell more copies which will make more profit and get more people talking about the magazine.

The target audience for this magazine is quite obviously young teenage girls. This is shown by the colours used on the cover and also the advertisements. For example there is an advert for Claire's accessories in the top left hand corner. Claire's accessories is a shop in which mainly teenage girls visit, and by having there advert on the front cover shows to us that the main target audience is teenage girls, as anybody else would not really be interested in this, unless they were buying it for a younger teen girl. The social class is quite difficult to establish for this genre of magazine as you can really only base the class off the price, yet with the price only be set at around £3 or £4, I would guess its for a middle/working class. This is because if it was for higher A class, then the price would be much higher, as people of this class would be able to afford it.

One Direction have been dressed in quite casual looking clothes for the cover of this mag. The colours are all blues, whites and blacks and the props on the cover are mainly shoes and purses. This all implies and shows us that yet again the genre is teenage girls. They have also chosen to select a medium shot of the cover boys, which shows their clothes, up to about hip height, and faces- with a little background. This allows us to see their facial expressions and what their are wearing, which both hold major importance when it comes to media language. The colour scheme for the whole magazine all situates around the 5 boys, especially the bottom poster advertisements as this helps draw peoples attentions in shops as when your eye sees a certain colour, everything else on that page that is the same colour is then picked up by your eye, which means your attention is then drawn all over the page, making you more interested and more likely to buy it. The colours used on the actual mag are all bright and bold colours that stand out a mile off, meaning it will more than likely grab a teenage girls attention as teen girls tend to like bright pinks and yellows. Here, yet again, the colours are helping us to identify what genre and what audience the magazine is and aimed at. The fonts used are all bold and funky fonts. They symbolise fun and silliness, possibly an immature aspect too, which shows that it is for a younger audience rather than an adult one. Also, they use more bolder fonts for main titles and subheadings. This is more than likely because its the most important part of the text, so therefore it will draw your attention first and then you will hopefully want to read more into the smaller text, the isn't as bold, which will give out more information on the 'story', if you like.

Research and Planning ANALYSIS MAGAZINE 1

The genre of this magazine is obvoiusly pop. The artists that are featured on the front cover of this magazine are people such as Meghan Trainor, The Vamps and Taylor Swift. These music acts are all part of the pop genre which suggests to us that this is a pop magazine. Also, the colours are bright and bold, ones that stand out, which hints to us too that this is a pop magazine, as if it was a rock magazine bright pinks and yellows wouldn't be used. The fonts that are used are also bold and outstanding from others. The text is all in bold writing and funky 'cute' fonts which shows us that this is no other than a pop magazine. The stories that are fetaured on he front cover are all about celeberites that are in the pop music buisness or art of the pop world, and also stories about first kisses, which shows us who the magazine is aimed at, which helps us decode and know which genre it is.

Meghan Trainor is the cover girl on this magazine issue, wearing a lacey blue top and bright makeup. She is smiling, very happily, and looks excited to be there. Her clothes are bright and stand out and give off a positive vibe. She is represnted as the sterotypical pop princess by what she is wearing and the facial expersion on her face. The other artists on the front are also all smiling and wearing clothes that are either bright or give off a happy glow. This indicates to us that this is a happy smiley magazine for young girls who love bubblegum pop.

The audience this magazine is targeted at would stereotypically be teenage girls. This is shown to us by the colours used, bright and bold, the artists on the cover, Meghan Trainor and Joey Essex, and the fonts used, bold and colourful.

The shot type that is used on the front cover of this magazine is a medium close up. This shows its a pop magazine as if it was a rock magazine, for example, it would most likely have a long shot, featuring almost the whole body and a lot of the background. There is also little images of certain celebs heads which can be seen as a little silly, in a nice way, but it gives it that immature feel which also indicates to us that this magazine is for teenagers, specifically girls. The colours used are all bright and bold pinks, yellows and blues... fun colours that draw your attention whether you like it or not. The font sizes are bold and in your face. They have also used many different font types which helps to grab your attention as you want to look in all different places to see all the different fonts. Lastly, the clothes and props used are all bold and bright. Little images of lip prints and nail varnishes are also on the cover, which shows its for young girls.

Finally, the BBC logo is featured in the top left hand corner on the front cover of this magazine which shows its a main BBC branded magazine. The BBC holds high status as it has a channel, studios, magazines etc, therefore by placing the logo on the cover gives it a little status, meaning it will more than likely be a good read for its main auidience.

Research and Planning MY FINISHED COLLEGE MAGAZINE

I decided to keep my final magazine cover the exact same as my draft. This is because I really liked the way it looked and it was exactly how i imagined and wanted it.

To create the front cover of my college magazine I used the Adobe Photoshop software.
The tools I used were as followed:

*Text- I used the text tool to insert the text onto my magazine cover, but I used a website called DaFont to select my fonts. I preferred to find more unusual and better suiting fonts for my magazine genre, rather than the usual bog standard fonts that are already available on Photoshop.
*Layout- I used the layout tool to put the bubbles around my story titles and selected the white colour to go around the text as its black so this helps it really stand out. Also, I did the main masthead in white so therefore the readers eyes will be automatically directed to the story texts after the masthead as they are both the same colour. Although, I put my main story at the bottom in green as it matches the green door in the picture, so therefore attention will hopefully be yet again gained.
*Picture insert- I inserted the barcode image, as every real magazine has one therefore I needed one. I also inserted the Clarendon logo in the top left hand corner and used the pro cut laser tool to cut it out, so no white background was left surrounding it. This made it look more professional.
*Spot healing brush tool- To discard of my spots and make my skin look smooth.

To create my contents page I used a software called InDesign.

Research and Planning MAGAZINE STARTER

Today, although it doesn't look much, we took our photos for my front cover. This was an important step as if this wasn't don't correctly, the cover wouldn't be right. I had to select an appropriate picture of all that we took which had to be a medium close up. Eventually, I decided on this one as the best as it shows us all smiling and the college in the background. Also, this is the right choice of picture as its a portrait image, which fits my magazine cover, and its a medium close up, which is a requirement.

Also I have opened this image in photoshop and began to start designing my font cover around it. I have also disgusted and dismissed any blemishes, by using the Spot healing tool and also whitening our teeth with the Colour Replacement tool.

Research and Planning 3 DIFFERENT FONTS

I have selected these fonts as I feel they are appropriate for the genre and masthead of the magazine.

Research and Planning 5 QUESTIONS FILM

In this short film I produced, 5 different questions are asked in the course of it. These questions are along the lines of; What colour scheme would you like on an ideal college magazine?, How much would you like to pay for a college magazine?,  What draws you to a magazine in a local shop?, What information would you like to read about in a college magazine? and What draws you to the cover of a magazine?.

These questions were all answered in this short movie and it will help me with my magazine as now i know what information and layouts/ colours to use in able to get my age range buying my magazine. I also found out how much they would round about like today for a college magazine, which helps me as I now know what price to set it at where theres is a huge chance more students would buy it than wouldn't, as they think its too expensive.

Research and Planning 5 COLLEGE/ SCHOOL MAGCOVERS

All these college/ high school magazine covers have certain aspects that are similar and certain qualities in common.

THEY ALL HAVE:
*The masthead college in bold writing that stands out - This is maybe to draw your attention in as it will be the first thing you see when you look at the cover.
*The logo positioned somewhere on the cover - this helps to identify a school or college, maybe if a person/ people don't know the name of the institution the logo may help to identify it and they may recognise the place by the logo.
*Images of a student/ a group of pupils - this helps to show a little insider of the school. For example, if the student(s) are smiling it hints to someone, maybe wanting to send their child there, that its a happy and enjoyable place/environment to be in.

NOT ALL BUT SOME HAVE:
*A slogan/ their mission - this helps parents and careers wishing to send their children to that place what the school will encourage in their learning and it also gives a slight indication to how the college runs and its moral values.

In my opinion, you can tell they are all college/ school magazines as they all look professional. What I mean by this is they all have things like colour schemes. This makes them look more of a high standard. Also, they all include a main image of a student which shows they are a college magazine as pupils attend these institutions. This also helps promote what the environment is like there through visualisation rather than words, like said earlier; if the child looks happy and is smiling it suggests that the institution is a nice, safe and friendly one to be in. Also, they all have the word COLLEGE as their masthead, or part of it. This tells us its a college magazine for many obvoius reasons as its stating what it is. As well as all this, they all have young people on the cover, which implies that they are college magazines as it s usually young students who attend college. The stories included on the cover all link to young students as well, which shows us who the audience to the magazine is aimed at, which we know from these stories is students.
